first_img Testing PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC): Two former West Indies cricketers say they are baffled by the latest decision by match officials to report spinner Sunil Narine to the International Cricket Council (ICC) for having a suspect bowling action. Former off spinner Rangy Nanan and former opener Philo Wallace say they have been monitoring Narine’s bowling and are convinced there is nothing wrong with his action. Narine was reported following Saturday’s rain-hit third one-day inter-national (ODI) which West Indies lost by 19 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method. “I am probably blind because from what I have seen of this man, he is bowling well within the limits of what is allowed in terms of bending of the arm by the ICC. I have looked at him closely and I can tell you from my experience he is bowling legally,” said Wallace, during a comment as an analyst on the Sportsdrive show. “I saw a split screen on the last game of his bowling and he is nicely side-on and when you adopt this position, it is very difficult to bend the arm beyond 15 degrees. In my opinion, Narine’s action is even better than the Sri Lankan player Sachithra Senanayake who took four wickets in the T20 match.” Narine will now have to undergo testing on his action within two weeks, but will be allowed to continue bowling until the results of the tests are known. He was also twice reported for a suspect action during last year’s Champions League Twenty20 and was forced to undergo Indian Cricket Board-approved testing before he was allowed to turn out in the Indian Premier League earlier this year. Nanan says he is surprised that Narine is being reported again and says he believes the Trinidad and Tobago spinner is being targeted. “I looked at the bowling action of Narine during the matches and I am finding it difficult to understand why they are calling him,” said Nanan, who also played for Trinidad and Tobago. “His action looked good and this is very surprising to me, so much so that I think he is being targeted. He is the only West Indian bowler that the opposition around the world is afraid of and I think this is the reason he is being targeted.” Narine, the leading bowler in the ICC rankings in both Twenty20 and ODIs, is the second West Indies bowler to be reported to the ICC during the series, with Marlon Samuels suffering the same fate following the second Test in Galle.last_img read more

first_imgRising West Indies leg-spin bowler Afy Fletcher has credited her improved form to more time spent working on her game. The Grenadian, a fringe player for quite a while, made the remarks following her standout performances in the team’s ongoing home series against England. The diminutive 29-year-old has so far claimed five wickets in the series following figures of three for 20 off 10 overs and two for 21 off 10 overs in the first two games, which were played at the Trelawny Stadium. The five-match series is level at 1-1 heading into Game Three, which will be played today at Sabina Park. “It’s just a whole lot of hard work that has got me to this stage,” said Fletcher. “I’ve spent a lot of time working on bowling with both my coaches back at home and with the West Indies team, and it’s good to see it paying off.” Fletcher, who has been used as first-change bowler thus far, has also expressed satisfaction at being referred to as a “go-to” bowler by captain Stafanie Taylor. “I see it as quite a compliment to be referred to as to a go-to player,” she said. “I guess the captain has a lot of confidence in my abilities, and it is just for me to repay her the best way I can. Fletcher has so far taken 21 wickets in 21 matches at an average of 19.52. Meanwhile, looking ahead of the third game of the series, Fletcher also believes the West Indies are in a good position, having assessed what the visitors have brought to the table so far. “The game should again be close, but we are very confident of our chances,” she said. “We are much more aware of their game and know our strengths, and if we should play to our strengths we should come out on top.” The series is scheduled to climax with the playing of the fourth and fifth matches on Sunday and next Wednesday at Sabina Park.last_img read more

first_imgThe Jamaica Scorpions will be look to leapfrog leaders Barbados Pride atop the standings in the Digicel WICB Regional Four-day Championship when the two meet at Sabina Park, starting today. The Nikita Miller-led Scorpions, fresh off a narrow win over the Windward Islands Volcanoes last weekend, are fifth in the six-team championship but are just 3.4 points behind Barbados Pride.Barbados lead with 24.4 points, with the Leeward Islands Hurricanes second on 24.2. Defending champions the Guyana Jaguars are third on 24 points with the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force fourth on 22. The Scorpions are next with 21 points, while rounding off the standings are the Windwards, who, having notched up two losses, are on 20.6 points.Starting this season, 0.2 of a point is awarded to teams for each wicket taken by a fast bowler.”Barbados will come here the more confident team, but I am always confident in my bowling team, regardless of the surface and the opponents. The batting, that is my concern,” Miller said ahead of the match.”If we can correct that (weak batting) and give the bowling unit a chance to rest and think about how to attack our opponents, we will do well,” he added.Jamaica, who are yet to pass 250 runs to date, will enter the contest hoping for an improved batting display. The local selectors have looked to bolster that area by including former West Indies Under-19 all-rounder Fabian Allen in the squad. The 21-year-old has come in to replace 19-year-old fast bowler Oshane Thomas. With Thomas out, the squad is then left with only one specialist fast bowler in Reynard Leveridge. The West Indies A team player is set to lead the attack and should share the new ball with all-rounder Derval Green.Allen, who also bowls spin is expected to provide back-up for Miller and leg-spinner Damion Jacobs, as well as add to the middle-order batting.Barbados, meanwhile, have named an unchanged squad from their impressive 292 runs victory over Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in Port-of-Spain last weekend. They will be led by West Indies Test players all-rounder Roston Chase, left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, fast bowler Kemar Roach, and batsman, Sharmarh Brooks.Jamaica Scorpions (from): Nikita Miller (captain), Fabian Allen, Jermaine Blackwood, John Campbell, Derval Green, Trevon Griffith, Damion Jacobs, Brandon King, Reynard Leveridge, AndrÈ McCarthy, Devon Thomas, Shacaya Thomas, Chadwick WaltonBarbados Pride (from): Kevin Stoute (captain), Anthony Alleyne, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Nikolai Charles, Justin Greaves, Aaron Jones, Kevin McClean, Omar Phillips, Mario Rampersaud, Kemar Roach, Jomel Warrican, Kenroy Williamslast_img read more

first_imgFOURTEEN finals, eight on the track and six in the field, will be contested on today’s opening day of the two-day NCB Intercollegiate Track and Field Championships scheduled for the National Stadium at 1 p.m on both days. The women’s triple jump and the men’s javelin throw will open the meet. G.C. Foster College are the defending men’s and women’s champions, but they can expect strong competition from University of Technology, the University of West Indies and Mico University College. There will be added motivation to perform well over the next two days as the top male and female athletes will walk away with a cash prize of $100,000 each. A year ago, Olympic sprint champion Elaine Thompson dazzled at the meet with record-breaking performances in the 100 metres, and in the past, stars such as Shelly Ann Fraser Pryce, Hansle Parchment, Rasheed Dwyer and Asafa Powell have competed at the meet. New stars are emerging and waiting to perform on the big stage. The outstanding athletes at this year’s meet could be rewarded with trips to the 29th World University Games in Taipei City, Taiwan. One name that comes to mind is G.C. Foster College’s Sashalee Forbes, who ran in the preliminary round for Jamaica in the women’s 4×100 metres relay in Rio de Janeiro last year. The team won a silver in the final. Today’s opening day on the track will see the finals of the women’s and men’s 400 metres hurdles, men’s and women’s 100m, men’s and women’s 800m, and men’s and women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase. One event which is expected to garner a lot of interest is the women’s 400m, which has its preliminary round at 2:05 p.m. This final could see at least eight athletes going under 53.5 seconds. The field is expected to include Mico’s Dawnalee Loney and Tiffany James, the 2016 IAAF World Under-20 champion, UTech’s Junelle Bromfield and Jodyann Williams. The men event should be just as exciting, with G.C. Foster’s Demish Gaye and Olympian Javere Bell of Mico, the leading contenders. The championships will also feature a cheerleading contest, which will be held tomorrow.last_img read more
