first_imgGareth Southgate has told talkSPORT players with senior England caps must realise playing for the Under-21 side isn’t a backward step.Luke Shaw and Calum Chambers are both in the Young Lions’ squad for their Euro 2015 play-off ties with Croatia after recent call-ups to Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions group. And Southgate has insisted the players, who he revealed have been positive about the decision, must realise playing in such games for the younger age group will be good for their development. He told Kick Off: “We want to get away from the perception that playing for the Under-21s is a backwards step. It’s a development opportunity and with a game like this, where it’s an intense play-off, it’s a great experience.“Someone like Luke Shaw has only got three Under-21 caps and a couple of senior caps now so he’s still, in international terms, relatively inexperienced, albeit he is a very mature player.“We also feel, moving forward, if we’re going to be successful at senior level we need players with the humility to step down and do this. Calum Chamber and Luke Shaw have done this and when we spoke to them their reaction was great and that’s encouraging.“Frankly, we’re only interested in players with that mentality.”last_img read more
