first_imgThere is no question that having Wolverine claws is intimidating, but wouldn’t it be better if they were also electrified? All it takes to make that happen is some mechanical skill, wiring work, and a blatant disregard for your personal safety. I’m sure most Geek.com readers have those in spades.YouTuber and polite Canadian Master James has hacked together just such an instrument of death. The claws themselves were a custom job he worked on long before the notion of electrifying them ever came to mind. Each of the six blades is made from aluminum because it was easy to machine. After being sanded, sharpened, and welded, Master James had them electroplated with nickel. As for the outrageously dangerous part, he was inspired by a recent Hackaday video featuring the electrified Thor’s hammer. That device is a foam shell built around an 80,000 volt tesla coil. The basic nature of the Wolverine claws made that course of action implausible. To make the lightning claws happen, Master James rigged up the transformer from an old oil furnace. The wiring was fed into the two sets of claws, and James gave it a test run for your video amusement. While much of this project seems ill advised, the claws were at least held in place with pliers covered in electrical tape.Sure enough, the slightest touch of the claws produces an arc of electricity. Master James says he isn’t sure how much power the transformer puts out, but considering the size of the arc and insulation properties of air, he’s seeing somewhere in the neighborhood of 20,000-30,000 volts. Yeah, that’ll ruin your day.If you decide to try something like this, do be careful. But also get a video.last_img read more
