first_imgThe 59th-annual Newport Folk Festival is currently underway, taking over Newport, Rhode Island’s Fort Adams State Park. The festival has long stood out as one of the premier music events in the Northeast, consistently curating one of the most expansive and highly anticipated lineups of the summer. On Saturday night, the secret headliner revealed itself to be Mumford And Sons. The British band played 15 songs, packing the setlist with unordinary covers and exciting guests.During their surprise set, Mumford And Sons kicked things off with Brandi Carlile, Maggie Rogers, and Jerry Douglas for a collaborative rendition of their own “Awake My Soul” from 2009’s Sigh No More. The next six songs remained within the band’s original, career-spanning catalog, before shocking the crowd with an unexpected cover of Radiohead‘s “All I Need”, welcoming out Phoebe Bridgers for the In Rainbows track, as well as dobro player Jerry Douglas, who stuck around through the remainder of the set. After the band’s own “Ghosts That We Knew”, Mumford And Songs welcomed out Brandi Carlile once again for a cover of Simon & Garfunkel‘s “The Boxer”. Carlile stuck around for another cover, The New Basement Tapes‘ “Kansas City”, penned by Bob Dylan, a veteran of the Newport Folk Festival.Following Sigh No More‘s “Dust Bowl Dance”, 24-year-old Maggie Rogers returned to the stage to play her own hit, “Alaska”, with Mumford And Sons–marking a truly beautiful moment for the up-and-coming star. After their own “I Will Wait”, Mumford And Sons welcomed out Mavis Staples, Brandi Carlile, Maggie Rogers, Phoebe Bridgers, Phil Cook, and MC Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger) for a celebratory finalé, appropriately covering The Band‘s “The Weight” to close out the surprise set.Mumford and Sons fear.
